Week 9. Some great ideas gleaned from PD and FB

A little reminder for programming.
When programming for writing look at the Overview of Genres' Structures and Features hand out that is in your Curriculum File.
There is a box for each genre that is headed Language features.  These should be the content of your guided writing - 'Formal English' sessions.  This information will support the child in the writing of this genre. Students should also be familiar with 'language' of the Purpose, Variations and Structural Features of the Genre.

A few little gems for the week.

Only want part of an online video to use for teaching?

EdPuzzle
Got a YouTube clip you use but don't want to use all of it? Then check out EdPuzzle.
You can clip the video, add questions and check for understanding. Magic.  Amie.

Fantastic

I recently came across an amazing website called Rewordify.com which can help students to  understand what they read. Paste any text or website into the box to rewordify the text into simpler language. Easier to understand words replace difficult text shown with highlighting. This is a fantastic tool for students trying to comprehend online information for research purposes, and will also help them to broaden their vocabulary.  Hope it's useful!  Amie.

Week 7. Term Two. Bits and Bobs...

Howard Gardner, in his writings on the Multiple Intelligence's reminds us that some children learn better through (and with)  musical experience. If you are like me you were not given the gift of musical talent, so for we less musically talented teachers this can be a challenge and a little help never goes astray.   The site below provides some classical music to use with literature.  This is a great way to enrich children's experiences.
Classical Music to go with Literature.

In my search for articles to help out a certain little man in my classroom I came across this article. Not really suitable for my use and pretty much Behaviour Management 101 but it may make useful "revision" reading.
Management In the Classroom.

Here are some spelling rules charts, as suggested by Fiona Glumac.

Evidently this style of  Sight Word warm up power point was suggested at the John Flemming Explicit Teaching PD recently.  Whilst I am cautionary about  John Flemming.  I do believe there is room for warm ups like this... I am looking for more exciting versions.  There are Apps for iPads that would be more interesting than this I am sure. The Fry Sight Words form the basis of the PLD sight word list. Use the MP4 Version.

A competition to design a google cover page.  Year 1 - 10.  How good would it be for OLC to win this!!  Come on... someone have a go.  You could do a writing activity to go with it!  Some reading and research maybe...   The lesson plan tab has some videos.  I haven't viewed them so you had better check the content first!

Happy weekend everyone,

Phonemic Awareness

We often see games and activities where spelling words  are broken up and put into boxes.
The attached link will give you some background to why we do this.  One of the major reasons for poor spelling is poor phonemic awareness.  There is a video on this link that will show you how to use Elkonin Boxes when conferencing students about their writing.  The Reading Rockets website has lots of great ideas on it....have a peruse while you are there.

Story Telling Apps. PLD Parent Information.

Please find below a link to some suggested story telling Apps.  Some of these look like great fun as well as being educational.

They could be used to develop comprehension by doing retells or exploring characters.
Bring some of the ideas you come up with to the next PLC to share.
Remember that verbalizing a story before writing it helps to prepare students for writing.

Story Telling Apps.

Following Parent Teacher Interviews it may be of assistance to you to use some of the information available on the PLD website to give parents ideas on ways in which they can help their children.

PLD Parent Information.

Today I made a set of "Into the Book" comprehension posters for each classroom.  As soon as the laminate machine  returns they will be laminated and ready for display.  It is our aim to use these comprehension strategy headings in all classrooms.  We will also send this information out to parents in the near future so that they too will be familiar with the strategies.

Don't for get to visit the CEO intranet and look at the great resources available to you under the curriculum tab.

Have a great week.

I have a hand out of further strategies to use in LDT which I will hand out during the next PLC.  It is to be kept in your curriculum folder.

Managing Literacy Dedicated Time

Managing Literacy Dedicated Time

-       In order to run an effective LDT session, teachers often need to invest the first 6 weeks of school to develop routines and set expectations. A slow and purposeful beginning will lead to a competent, successful and cohesive classroom culture.
-       At the beginning of the year, co-construct anchor charts to show what the classroom will look like/ sound like when they are writing independently, working in small reading groups while the teacher is with a guided reading group, etc.
-       Use timers (even for yourself!)
-       A whole-school behavior management plan/ policy is pivotal, as is clear classroom expectations and consequences
-       Keep routines consistent. Where possible, ensure that LDT practices take place in the same order, and at the same time each day.
-       Keep modeled/ shared reading or writing sessions brief. This is often what causes teachers to struggle to fit everything in. If a teacher’s shared/ modeled reading or writing session is taking longer than 15 minutes (Years 1-3) or 20 minutes (Years 4-6), the teacher is trying to fit too many things into their mini-lesson. Remember- a mini-lesson should have one singular focus and therefore should not go for too long.
-       Establish clear transitions (e.g. how do children move from independent reading to their reading activity while the teacher is with a guided reading group?).
-       Set engaging activities that provide opportunities for student choice during independent reading and writing activities.

-       Use a sound meter to establish expectations of noise levels during each component of LDT
