I recently came across an amazing website called Rewordify.com which can help students to understand what they read. Paste any text or website into the box to rewordify the text into simpler language. Easier to understand words replace difficult text shown with highlighting. This is a fantastic tool for students trying to comprehend online information for research purposes, and will also help them to broaden their vocabulary. Hope it's useful! Amie.

Week 7. Term Two. Bits and Bobs...
Howard Gardner, in his writings on the Multiple Intelligence's reminds us that some children learn better through (and with) musical experience. If you are like me you were not given the gift of musical talent, so for we less musically talented teachers this can be a challenge and a little help never goes astray. The site below provides some classical music to use with literature. This is a great way to enrich children's experiences.
Classical Music to go with Literature.
In my search for articles to help out a certain little man in my classroom I came across this article. Not really suitable for my use and pretty much Behaviour Management 101 but it may make useful "revision" reading.
Management In the Classroom.
Here are some spelling rules charts, as suggested by Fiona Glumac.
Spelling Rules
Evidently this style of Sight Word warm up power point was suggested at the John Flemming Explicit Teaching PD recently. Whilst I am cautionary about John Flemming. I do believe there is room for warm ups like this... I am looking for more exciting versions. There are Apps for iPads that would be more interesting than this I am sure. The Fry Sight Words form the basis of the PLD sight word list. Use the MP4 Version.
Sight Word Warm up
A competition to design a google cover page. Year 1 - 10. How good would it be for OLC to win this!! Come on... someone have a go. You could do a writing activity to go with it! Some reading and research maybe... The lesson plan tab has some videos. I haven't viewed them so you had better check the content first!

Happy weekend everyone,

Phonemic Awareness
We often see games and activities where spelling words are broken up and put into boxes.
The attached link will give you some background to why we do this. One of the major reasons for poor spelling is poor phonemic awareness. There is a video on this link that will show you how to use Elkonin Boxes when conferencing students about their writing. The Reading Rockets website has lots of great ideas on it....have a peruse while you are there.

A handy little book review poster for children to use when recommending texts for others to read.
Book Review Poster
Another idea for spelling.
Spelling Ideas. PP - 3
Sight word game. Could be adapted for all years (at risk).
Sight Word game.
This might be worth looking at for something to beef up your spelling. P - 3
Spelling App.
For 4 - 6 I have a spelling ideas hand out for the PLC meeting next week.
General Reading.
With a strong push for more formal learning in the Early Years this article by Lillian Katz, well known researcher in Early Childhood Education, puts things into perspective.
Whilst it is necessary to address the development of Phonemic Awareness and Oral Language, we must not forget the importance of play.
Formal Education in the Early Years. The Great Debate.
Explicit Teaching. Defined.

Phys ed.
These may be handy for your PE programming. I have been looking for them for a while. Be warned, they are long documents so don't send to print without checking first.

Story Telling Apps. PLD Parent Information.
Please find below a link to some suggested story telling Apps. Some of these look like great fun as well as being educational.
They could be used to develop comprehension by doing retells or exploring characters.
Bring some of the ideas you come up with to the next PLC to share.
Remember that verbalizing a story before writing it helps to prepare students for writing.
Story Telling Apps.
Following Parent Teacher Interviews it may be of assistance to you to use some of the information available on the PLD website to give parents ideas on ways in which they can help their children.
PLD Parent Information.
Today I made a set of "Into the Book" comprehension posters for each classroom. As soon as the laminate machine returns they will be laminated and ready for display. It is our aim to use these comprehension strategy headings in all classrooms. We will also send this information out to parents in the near future so that they too will be familiar with the strategies.
Don't for get to visit the CEO intranet and look at the great resources available to you under the curriculum tab.
Have a great week.
